Caterpillars

When I was a child
I lived in this neighborhood where
trees produced caterpillars
instead of leaves and boys would
chase screaming girls around for hours
holding them on sticks,
trap them in bottles sometimes,
sometimes inject them with fluids,
locate and open cocoons
until learning in science class
they were the biggest predators
of butterflies.

Day 3 of A to Z Challenge, a little bit late but here.

  1. I love caterpillars so the graphic description of the boys turning them into play things made me sad. I hope they mended their ways when better enlightened.

  2. I've never forgotten my neighbor Jeff Morris who gently admonished me, at about age 10, that the snail I was smushing 'hadn't done anything to me'. Stayed with me all this time. Your pen brought that memory back to the fore... ~

  3. Oh wow. You have good timing in your words. I felt this one, in every line... Lisa, co-host AtoZ 2015, @ http://www.lisabuiecollard.com
